Speech on the election, December strike, 13/12/19

Hi my name is Anna and I’m a climate activist with NISCN and thank you all for coming today despite the cold weather. As I’m sure most of you have seen, the polls are looking very bleak on the climate front. Us kids demanded a climate election. We even sacrificed our own education to show you how much we care about our future. But the adults have failed us yet again.

What they don’t realise is that all they’ve done is fuel our anger and our motivation. You’ve only seen the very beginning of what we can do. It’s only going to get harder for you to ignore us.

A lot of people say to me in twitter comments that I’m only striking to skip school. But if that were true, I wouldn’t be here. I don’t want to be out here in the freezing cold December weather when I could be in a nice warm classroom. But I feel as if I have to. All of the young people here today are here because we are scared. We are scared that we have only 11 years left to stop the climate crisis and five of those years will be ruled by a government that cares more about Brexit than the survival of the entire ecosystems currently collapsing or the Indigenous people being burned to death by forest fires.

We are too young to vote on the decisions that will affect our entire future so we must take to the streets to get our voices heard. I don’t think Westminster realise the true power young people hold in this country. We are on the right side of history but they are just too immature to admit it. Thank you.
